For the first time, doctors are dealing with Type 2 diabetes in children. With our obesity problems, researchers have issued warning that children will probably not live as long as their parents. What is this telling us?
And then we have a soon-to-be published study by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition that involved following over 8,000 men between the ages of 45 and 73 for an average of 15 years. All the men were healthy at the start of the study. They were questioned about their diet. Those who consumed more sugary drinks were more likely to have been diagnosed with prostate cancer by the end of the study.
The research also found that men who ate a lot of sugary breakfast cereals were 38 per cent more likely to develop milder forms of prostate cancer.
Then, there's the deadly cancer link with pancreatic cancer. A research team from the Karolinska Institute, discovered that consumption of two or more fizzy drinks per day, was linked to a 93 per cent greater risk of pancreatic cancer.
The pancreas is designed to produce digestive enzymes and to manufacture the blood sugar-stabilizing hormone insulin. Research has shown that processed fructose (like HFCS) plays havoc on insulin levels...and once insulin levels are disrupted, it's an invitation for type 2 diabetes and obesity.
High fructose corn syrup is not an innocent, healthy natural sugar from fruit. The natural fructose found in fruit for example, is fine: the 10g or so of fructose in an apple is probably released slowly because of the fibre in the apple and because the fructose is inside the cells of the apple. However, a number of studies have shown that high intakes of non-fruit based fructose or processed fructose is especially difficult for the body to metabolise, and is a risk for type 2 diabetes. This is because fructose and sucrose are not metabolically equivalent.
